Procedures
Homework
Students will be assigned one written homework Mondays-Thursdays. Homework will be sent home in the homework folder and should be returned to school the following day. Aside from written homework, please ensure that your child is reading with you or independently, for 15-30 minutes per day. Total homework time (including reading) should not exceed 40 minutes per day.
Absences
If your child has a planned absence, please let us know in advance when possible. We can arrange to have missed class work distributed in advance, so that your child is not overwhelmed upon his/her/their return. If your child has an unexpected absence (i.e. due to illness) missed work should still be completed. Please email me for a timeline to complete missed work.
Behavior
Students are encouraged to be on their best behavior in class. This means showing respect and kindness for all the people in class. Students are guided to use “I” statements to solve disagreements with their peers. When they are unable to solve a situation independently, they should ask an adult for assistance. If a student displays inappropriate behavior, they will be given a verbal warning. For a second infraction, a student may lose 5 minutes of privilege time. A third time warrants a talk with the principal and/or parents.
Field Trips
Field Trips are 2 trips this year so far.
-Mickelson Pumpkin Patch Field Trip on Monday, October 21st
-California Academy of Sciences Field Trip in November (Date TBD)
Special Events/Holidays/Celebrations
San Francisco is home to many cultures. We would like to make use of that resource. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or materials that would help enrich the students’ learning environment we would greatly appreciate it. You may choose to share your knowledge of a special holiday or cultural event. If you would like to do a craft, foreign language lesson, dance or share a cultural storytelling; we would very much like to share that experience with you. Please let me know if you are interested in something like this and we can discuss the details. Some special celebrations that have been celebrated by the K/1 class in the past includes: Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year, Diwali, Hanukkah, and St. Patrick's Day.
