Reading
Tips for reading with your child at home:
-
Make sure that you have a special “home reading” time every day.
-
Read to your child every day. This can be a story, a letter, or a poem.
-
Have a quiet reading area where books are easily accessible.
-
If your child is already a reader, listen to your child read something every day.
When your child comes to a word they don’t know:
-
Wait for a while and let your child think about it.
-
Remind your child that pictures in stories often give us clues.
-
Sound out the beginning sound of the word and see what would make sense in that sentence.
-
If your child still can’t get the word, tell them the word.
When you have finished reading, talk about what you have read.
-
Ask what your child liked or didn’t like about the story.
-
Talk about the illustrations and revisit interesting or new words.
-
Was there a problem in the story? What was it? What was the solution?
-
Who was the main character? Where did the story take place?
-
What happened in the beginning? Middle? End?
Our goal is to motivate children to develop a life-long love of reading. Thank you for helping us work toward that goal.
